Budva is Montenegro's most popular coastal destination and one of the liveliest places in the country. Known for its beautiful beaches, charming Old Town, boat trips, and vibrant summer atmosphere, it attracts visitors from all over Europe every year.
While some people come for the nightlife, there is much more to Budva than beach clubs and parties. Between historic streets, coastal walks, hidden beaches, and nearby islands, there is plenty to keep you busy for several days.

Explore Budva Old Town
Many visitors are surprised to discover that Budva has one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast. The Old Town is surrounded by stone walls and filled with narrow streets, small squares, churches, restaurants, and cafés. While it is smaller than Kotor's Old Town, it has a charming atmosphere and is especially beautiful in the evening.
One of my favorite things to do is simply wander through the streets and stop for a coffee overlooking the sea.
Relax at Mogren Beach
Located just a short walk from the Old Town, Mogren Beach is one of the most famous beaches in Montenegro. The beach is divided into two sections connected by a tunnel through the rocks. Surrounded by cliffs and crystal-clear water, it feels much more scenic than many of the larger beaches along the coast. Arrive early during the summer as it gets very busy.
Walk to the Dancing Girl Statue
One of Budva's most photographed landmarks is the famous Dancing Girl statue located on the coastal path between the Old Town and Mogren Beach. The viewpoint here offers beautiful views of Budva's coastline and makes a great photo stop.
Take a Boat Tour
One of the best ways to experience Budva is from the water. The coastline around Budva is beautiful, and there are plenty of boat tours available throughout the summer. Popular excursions include trips to Sveti Nikola Island, often called "Hawaii" by locals, scenic cruises past the famous Sveti Stefan, visits to hidden coastal caves, and sunset cruises along the Budva Riviera. If you're looking for something more private, you can also hire a small boat and explore the coastline at your own pace.
Visit Sveti Stefan
Although visitors can no longer freely explore the island itself, Sveti Stefan remains one of Montenegro's most iconic sights. The small fortified island connected to the mainland by a narrow causeway has appeared in countless travel magazines and postcards. The best experience is simply admiring the views from the surrounding beaches and viewpoints.
Go Kayaking Along the Coast
For something more active, consider renting a kayak and exploring the coastline. You'll discover hidden coves, small beaches, and viewpoints that are inaccessible by road.
How Many Days Do You Need in Budva?
Budva works well for both short visits and longer holidays.
1 day: Old Town, Mogren Beach, and sunset.
2–3 days: Add boat tours, nearby beaches, and Sveti Stefan.
4+ days: Use Budva as a base to explore the Montenegrin coast.
Where to Stay in Budva
Budva Old Town
Budva Old Town will be perfect if you want to stay close to restaurants, bars, and attractions. The atmosphere is fantastic, but accommodation is limited and can be more expensive.
Slovenska Plaža Area
Slovenska Plaža Area is a popular choice with plenty of hotels, restaurants, and easy beach access. This is where many first-time visitors choose to stay.
Becici
Becici is one of the best areas to stay near Budva. Located just outside the center, it offers a beautiful beach, a more relaxed atmosphere, and excellent hotels while still being close to town.
Sveti Stefan
Sveti Stefan is ideal for couples and travelers looking for a quieter and more scenic stay. This is a truly unique location to stay at and also more luxurious.
Best Beaches in Budva
Mogren Beach - The most famous beach in Budva and one of the most scenic.
Jaz Beach - A large beach popular with both locals and visitors. It also hosts concerts and festivals throughout the year.
Becici Beach - A long pebble beach with plenty of facilities and water sports.
Kamenovo Beach - Smaller, quieter, and surrounded by beautiful scenery.
Sveti Stefan Beach - Known for its incredible views of the famous island.
Best Viewpoints in Budva
Citadel Viewpoint - Located within the Old Town walls and offering fantastic views of the coastline.
Mogren Viewpoint - One of the classic photo spots overlooking Budva and the sea.
Sveti Stefan Viewpoint - Probably the most famous coastal viewpoint in Montenegro.
Kosmač Fortress - A lesser-known viewpoint above Budva with panoramic views of the Riviera.

Things to Know Before Visiting Budva
Budva Gets Extremely Busy in Summer
Budva is Montenegro's tourism capital. During July and August, beaches, restaurants, and streets can become very crowded.
Book Accommodation Early
The best hotels and apartments can sell out months in advance during peak season.
Beaches Are Mostly Pebble Beaches
Many visitors expect sandy beaches, but most beaches around Budva are pebble beaches. Water shoes can be useful.
Budva Is Not Just a Party Destination
While Budva is famous for nightlife, there is plenty to enjoy even if you have no interest in clubs or bars. The beaches, boat tours, Old Town, and coastal scenery are reason enough to visit.
