Places to Visit in Montenegro

Montenegro may be one of the smallest countries in Europe, but it packs an incredible amount into a tiny area. From medieval coastal towns and beautiful beaches to dramatic mountains, deep canyons, and historic monasteries, there is far more to see than many visitors expect.
Here are the best places to visit in Montenegro ⬇️
Central Montenegro
Ostrog Monastery
Built directly into a vertical cliff face, Ostrog Monastery is one of the most impressive places in Montenegro. The white monastery appears to hang from the mountainside and attracts both pilgrims and tourists from across the Balkans. Even if you are not religious, the setting alone makes it worth the visit. The views over the surrounding valley are spectacular, and the monastery itself feels unlike anywhere else in Europe.
Lake Skadar
Straddling the border between Montenegro and Albania, Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans and one of the country's hidden gems. The lake is famous for its birdlife, traditional fishing villages, and beautiful mountain scenery. One of the best ways to experience it is by taking a boat tour through the narrow channels covered with water lilies.
For wine lovers, this area is also home to some of Montenegro's most famous vineyards. Which leads me to my next point.
Wine Tasting in Montenegro
Many visitors don't realize that Montenegro has a long winemaking tradition. One popular experience is visiting Građani for a wine tasting at Winery Lipovac. Another option is touring the famous Plantaže vineyards near Podgorica, which is home to one of the largest vineyards in Europe.
Wine tours are a great way to experience a different side of Montenegro away from the coast.
Northern Montenegro
Durmitor National Park
If I had to choose one natural highlight in Montenegro, it would probably be Durmitor National Park. The park is filled with dramatic mountain peaks, hiking trails, alpine meadows, and some of the country's most spectacular scenery. It feels completely different from the Mediterranean coastline and shows another side of Montenegro.
Many travelers combine Durmitor with a visit to Tara Canyon and Black Lake.
Tara River Canyon
Often called the Grand Canyon of Europe, Tara River Canyon is one of the deepest canyons in the world. The canyon is famous for its turquoise river, dramatic viewpoints, and white-water rafting. Rafting the Tara River is one of the most popular adventure activities in Montenegro and an experience I highly recommend.

Black Lake (Crno Jezero)
Located within Durmitor National Park, Black Lake is one of Montenegro's most beautiful natural attractions. The walking trail around the lake is easy and suitable for most visitors. Surrounded by forests and mountain peaks, it's the perfect place to slow down and enjoy the scenery.
Coastal Montenegro
Kotor
Kotor is probably Montenegro's most famous destination and for good reason. The UNESCO-listed Old Town is full of narrow streets, historic churches, and charming squares. Above the town sits the famous Kotor Fortress, offering some of the best views in the country.
One of the newest attractions is the Kotor Cable Car, which takes visitors high above the Bay of Kotor for incredible panoramic views.
Also, I personally think a great way to experience Kotor and the whole of the Bay is by taking a boat trip. There are several options, length and price-wise ➡️ Boat Tours in Kotor.

Perast & Our Lady of the Rocks
Perast is one of the prettiest towns in Montenegro and often gets overshadowed by nearby Kotor. Personally, I think it's one of the most magical and beautiful little towns I have ever been to. Easy, my favorite place in Montenegro!
The small waterfront town is known for its stone palaces, peaceful atmosphere, and stunning bay views. I would recommend coming for a nice lunch by the waterfront or for the sunset!
Of course, from there you can also see the 'Our Lady of the Rocks' island and church. The island is one of Montenegro's most photographed landmarks and is famous because it is a completely man-made island. According to local legend, sailors discovered an icon of the Virgin Mary on a rock in the bay and, after each successful voyage, added more rocks to the spot. Over centuries, this gradually created the island that exists today.
Budva
Budva is Montenegro's most popular beach destination. The town combines a charming Old Town with beaches, nightlife, restaurants, and plenty of activities. During summer, Budva becomes the center of Montenegro's tourism scene.
Budva also features one of the most famous beaches in Montenegro - Mogren Beach. Located just a short walk from Budva Old Town, surrounded by cliffs and connected by a scenic coastal path, it offers beautiful views and clear water. Arriving early is recommended during summer as it fills up quickly.

Lovćen National Park
Rising above the coast, Lovćen National Park offers some of the most spectacular viewpoints in Montenegro. The highlight is the Njegoš Mausoleum, located at the summit of Mount Lovćen. After climbing the famous staircase, visitors are rewarded with breathtaking views stretching across the mountains, the Bay of Kotor, and the Adriatic coastline.
Is Podgorica Worth Visiting?
Podgorica, Montenegro's capital, is usually not the main reason people visit the country. However, it can be worth a stop if you're interested in local life or need a base before exploring central Montenegro.
If you do stop in Podgorica, you can check out the Millennium Bridge, Gorica Hill, Old Ribnica River Bridge. Most travelers only need half a day here.
