Why Visit Ohrid?
Ohrid is one of the oldest settlements in Europe and home to Lake Ohrid, one of the oldest and deepest lakes in the world. The city is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site thanks to its cultural and natural importance.
But beyond the history, what makes Ohrid special is the atmosphere. Days are spent wandering through stone streets, swimming in crystal-clear water, relaxing at lakeside cafés, and watching the sunset over the mountains. It feels both lively and peaceful at the same time.
Best Places to Visit in Ohrid
Ohrid Old Town
The Old Town is the heart of Ohrid and the best place to start exploring. The area is filled with narrow cobblestone streets, traditional houses, small churches, viewpoints, cafés, and hidden corners overlooking the lake. It is compact enough to explore entirely on foot, and getting slightly lost is part of the experience. One of the best things to do is simply wander without a plan and stop whenever a terrace or viewpoint catches your attention.
Church of Saint John at Kaneo
The Church of Saint John at Kaneo is easily the most iconic place in Ohrid. Perched dramatically on a cliff above the lake, the church offers one of the most beautiful views in North Macedonia. The walk there along the wooden lakeside boardwalk is just as scenic as the destination itself.
Sunset is the best time to visit, when the light reflects across the water and the surrounding mountains.
Samuel’s Fortress
Standing above the city, Samuel’s Fortress offers panoramic views across Ohrid, the lake, and the mountains beyond.
The climb is relatively short and absolutely worth it for the scenery alone. Early morning or late afternoon are the best times to go, especially during warmer months.
Ancient Theatre of Ohrid
The Ancient Theatre is one of the city’s most impressive archaeological landmarks. Originally built during ancient times, the theatre is still occasionally used for concerts and cultural events today. Even if there is no performance happening, it is worth stopping by while exploring the Old Town.
Best Things to Do in Ohrid
Walk Along the Lake Promenade
The lakeside promenade is one of the best places to experience the atmosphere of Ohrid. During the day, people gather at cafés and beaches, while evenings become lively with music, restaurants, and sunset views over the water. It is the perfect place for a relaxed evening walk. A great breakfast place I can recommend is Pier 82!
Take a Boat Trip
Seeing Ohrid from the water gives a completely different perspective of the city and the surrounding mountains. There are several options available, from short panoramic rides near Kaneo to longer trips toward Saint Naum. Sunset cruises are especially popular during warmer months. You can book on a spot or, to be safe, book a boat trip in advance!
Swim in Lake Ohrid
The lake is famous for its clear water, and during warmer weather, swimming becomes one of the highlights of visiting Ohrid. There are beaches, rocky swimming spots, and quieter areas all around the shoreline, depending on the atmosphere you prefer.
Try Local Food
One of the local specialties is Ohrid trout, traditionally served in lakeside restaurants around the city. Ohrid is also a great place to enjoy long, relaxed meals with lake views, especially during sunset. I discovered this amazing restaurant, which is a bit 'remote' but still within walking distance from the promenade - Kaneo! I loved the 'secret' location and the atmosphere there.
Optional Day Trip: Galicica National Park & Saint Naum Monastery
If you want to add a bit of nature and hiking to your Ohrid weekend, Galicica National Park is an excellent option. Located just above Ohrid, the park stretches through the mountains separating Lake Ohrid from Lake Prespa. It is known for its panoramic viewpoints, scenic drives, and hiking trails.
One of the best easy hikes leads to the famous “Two Lakes” viewpoint, where you can see both Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa at the same time.
For more experienced hikers, Magaro Peak offers even more spectacular panoramic views across the region.
On your way to or back from the viewpoints, you can also stop at the Saint Naum Monastery. Located near the Albanian border on the southern side of the lake, the monastery complex is surrounded by nature and famous for its crystal-clear springs.
The drive from Ohrid is beautiful, following the shoreline past beaches and small villages.
Practical Travel Tips for Ohrid
Getting There & Parking
Driving from Skopje to Ohrid takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours. Roads are generally in good condition, although weekends can become busy during summer. Having a car is especially useful if you plan to visit Saint Naum or Galicica National Park.
Parking inside the Old Town can be difficult due to narrow streets and pedestrian-only areas. Staying slightly outside the center and walking into town is often the easiest option.
Although Ohrid doesn't seem to be too big, exploring the city involves quite a bit of walking, stairs, and uphill streets. Comfortable shoes make a huge difference!
Best Time to Visit Ohrid
Late spring, summer, and early autumn are the best times to visit Ohrid. Early mornings and sunsets are especially beautiful and much calmer than the busy midday hours.
Even if the days feel warm and sunny, evenings by Lake Ohrid can become much cooler, especially outside the peak summer months. The combination of the lake breeze and surrounding mountains often brings a noticeable temperature drop after sunset. So pack a jacket or sweater!
Bring Some Cash
Most hotels, restaurants, and larger cafés in Ohrid accept cards, but smaller places still often prefer cash. It’s especially useful to carry Macedonian denars for:
parking
small cafés
beach bars
local bakeries
boat rides
roadside stops around the lake
ATMs are easy to find around Ohrid town, but having some cash already with you makes things much easier.
Ohrid Is Very Safe
Ohrid has a very relaxed atmosphere and is generally considered one of the safest destinations in the Balkans for visitors. The city stays lively late into the evening, especially near the lake promenade, where locals and visitors gather for walks, drinks, and dinner by the water.
Where to Stay in Ohrid
Although the obvious choice seems to be the Ohrid city center, I have a few better places to offer you, especially if you have a car.
So, if you are flying in or traveling by bus, then the Ohrid Old Town, of course, is a very charming option and offers a convenient location. Great pick if you don't need to park. The streets in the old town are very narrow and can get quite steep too, so not ideal for parking.
If you are travelling with a car, I absolutely recommend staying anywhere by the lake, but outside the Ohrid center. I believe most places by the lake have a private area/access to the lake, which makes swimming and just enjoying the lake much easier. Also, there are loads of parking spots near the promenade, so you can easily drive to the Ohrid center, park at the beginning of the promenade, and enjoy the city too. I stayed at Million dollar lake view and really enjoyed it! The view from my balcony ➡️
Also, any hotel at the promenade will be a great option if you are visiting for a few days and want to be in the mix of all the fun life in Ohrid. Loads of restaurant and bar options, with, of course, a beautiful lake view!
