North Macedonia is one of the Balkans’ most underrated destinations. Known for its beautiful lakes, mountain landscapes, historic towns, Ottoman architecture, and warm hospitality, the country offers a mix of culture, nature, and affordability that surprises many first-time visitors. I got to spend a month in Macedonia and was absolutely blown away on how amazing this country is! But I was extremely stressed to drive anywhere as the driving culture is intense to say the least.

Whether you are planning a weekend in Skopje, relaxing by Lake Ohrid, hiking in the mountains, or road-tripping through the Balkans, here is everything you should know before traveling to North Macedonia.

Is North Macedonia Safe?

Yes, North Macedonia is generally considered very safe for travelers.

Tourist areas in cities like Skopje and Ohrid stay lively late into the evening, and violent crime against tourists is uncommon.

As with any destination, normal travel awareness is enough:

  • watch your belongings in crowded places

  • avoid unlicensed taxis

  • carry cash for smaller establishments

Currency and Money

The local currency is the Macedonian denar (MKD). Although cards are accepted in many hotels, restaurants, and larger cafés, cash is still useful for:

  • local bakeries

  • taxis

  • parking

  • small cafés

  • markets

  • smaller villages

ATMs are easy to find in cities and tourist areas.

In the past years, I tended to travel only with cards, avoiding cash, but in Macedonia I had to take some money out as I faced a few situations where cash was the only way.

Is North Macedonia Expensive?

No, North Macedonia is one of the more affordable countries in Europe.

Compared to many Western European destinations, you can expect:

  • lower hotel prices

  • affordable restaurants

  • inexpensive public transport

  • budget-friendly activities

This makes it especially attractive for budget travelers and long-term Balkan trips.

Part of happy travels for me is when I can just enjoy a lunch or dinner somewhere nice without obsessing about prices on the menu. And in Macedonia, at the end of my trip, I wasn't even checking prices anymore because everything was always affordable, and no crazy tourist pricing!

Getting Around North Macedonia

By Car

Renting a car is one of the best ways to explore the country. Road trips are popular because:

  • distances are short

  • mountain scenery is beautiful

  • many natural attractions are easier to access by car

Driving from Skopje to Ohrid, for example, takes around 2.5 to 3 hours, and the route is so scenic. Driving around Macedonia is definitely a good option as roads are quite good and a lot of new highways are being built so I think in the next 10 years it will only get better. But driving in the city, specifically in Skopje, is a little bit of a nightmare. Road quality is not the best, so you do need to avoid a lot of potholes, and more importantly, the driving culture is very aggressive. People cutting in 10 cm before you. I enjoyed driving outside cities, but in Skopje, I was stressed and intense the whole time. You literally have to be 110% vigivlent the whole time because a few cars will definitely cut before you. Also, they beep once the green light comes on. Like, if you are 0.001 second late, they will beep. It is intense.

By Bus

Buses connect most major cities and towns and are affordable and widely used. Skopje serves as the country’s main transport hub for both domestic and international routes.

By Taxi

The government still pretty much protects the local taxis, so apps like Uber or Bolt do not work in North Macedonia, but they do have implemented local taxi apps to make the process easier:

  • Wizi Taxi - one of the main ride-hailing style apps used in Skopje. You can order and pay through the app.

  • Or also - Nase Taxi Skopje App

In general, taxis within the city are quite affordable and great for short distances. If you are catching a taxi on the go, make sure they are the official taxis with a meter.

What Is the Best Time to Visit?

The best time to visit North Macedonia depends on your travel style. For me personally, I think May, June, and September are the best months. It is not too hot (August can be extremely hot 🔥), but at the same time, it is warm and nice most of the time. Great to still enjoy places like Lake Ohrid, but not hot enough to also do some hiking and sightseeing.

Spring and Early Autumn

Ideal for:

  • sightseeing

  • hiking

  • road trips

  • exploring cities comfortably

Even after warm days, evenings, especially near lakes or in the mountains, can become surprisingly chilly. A light jacket or sweater is useful, particularly in Ohrid, Galicica, and mountain areas.

Summer

Best for:

  • Lake Ohrid

  • swimming

  • nightlife

  • festivals

  • outdoor dining

Temperatures can become very hot in cities like Skopje during July and August.

Winter

Perfect for:

  • skiing

  • mountain escapes

  • winter landscapes in Mavrovo and the surrounding regions

What Food Should You Try?

North Macedonian cuisine is heavily influenced by Balkan, Mediterranean, and Ottoman traditions. Popular dishes include:

  • tavče gravče 🌿 - the country’s national dish, made with baked beans cooked slowly in a traditional clay pot and seasoned with onions, peppers, and spices.

  • kebapi - small grilled minced meat sausages usually served with onions, flatbread, and spicy pepper spreads, especially popular as a casual street food meal.

  • ajvar 🌿 - a rich roasted red pepper spread often served as a side dish or appetizer, especially during autumn and winter.

  • burek - a flaky pastry filled with cheese, meat, spinach, or potatoes, commonly eaten for breakfast or as a quick snack. Can be vegetarian depending on the filling. Cheese burek and spinach burek are common vegetarian options. 🌿

  • shopska salad 🌿 - a refreshing salad made with tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, and grated white cheese, often served alongside grilled dishes.

  • grilled meats - mixed grills and barbecue dishes are extremely popular throughout the country and are often enjoyed during long family-style meals.

  • Ohrid trout - a famous freshwater fish traditionally associated with Lake Ohrid and considered one of the region’s most well-known local specialties. A must try when visiting Lake Ohrid.

English Is Common in Tourist Areas

In Skopje, Ohrid, and other tourist destinations, many people speak English well. And not just the younger generation, all the generations. I was postivity surprises how I could communicate in English with everyone, even older cashier ladies.

In smaller villages and rural areas, communication can sometimes be more limited, but locals are generally welcoming and helpful. Honestly, the nicest people I have ever met!

Smoking Is Common

Visitors may notice that smoking is still common in cafés, restaurants, and bars compared to many Western European countries. Outdoor terraces are especially popular year-round. This is something you won't be able to avoid - is it a big part of their culture.

North Macedonia Is Great for Slow Travel

One of the best things about traveling in North Macedonia is the relaxed pace.

People take time over coffee, long meals, and evening walks. The atmosphere feels less rushed than in many larger European cities, which is part of the country’s charm.

Interesting Fact - Until 2019, the country was officially known as the Republic of Macedonia. Following a long-standing naming dispute with neighboring Greece, the country changed its official name to the Republic of North Macedonia after the Prespa Agreement was signed in 2018 and implemented in 2019. Today, both locals and travelers still often casually refer to the country simply as “Macedonia” in everyday conversation.
