Must See in Skopje | North Macedonia

I had the chance to spend a month in Skopje, and I am surprised more people don't talk about this capital in the Balkans! I think it is an excellent digital nomad spot and a beautiful city to spend some time in during your Macedonia trip.

Skopje is a city of contrasts. You can spend the morning wandering through centuries-old Ottoman streets, the afternoon exploring modern museums and brutalist landmarks, and the evening drinking cocktails beside the Vardar River.

I love how Skopje is located in a valley surrounded by mountains. And the city is so affordable, making the time there even more enjoyable.

Let's take a look at all the places you can't miss out on when in Skopje!

Best Places to Visit in Skopje

Macedonia Square

Macedonia Square is the center of the city and usually the first stop for visitors. The square is filled with massive statues, fountains, historic buildings, and wide pedestrian streets. The enormous Warrior on a Horse monument dominates the area and has become one of the city’s most recognizable landmarks. Both during the day and at night, the square stays lively with locals, street performers, cafés, and events.

Stone Bridge

Connecting the modern center with the Old Bazaar, the Stone Bridge is one of the most iconic landmarks in Skopje. Crossing the bridge feels like moving between two completely different sides of the city - modern Skopje on one side and the historic Ottoman quarter on the other. It is especially beautiful at sunset when the city lights begin reflecting over the Vardar River.

Old Bazaar

The Old Bazaar is easily one of the best parts of Skopje. Filled with narrow streets, tea houses, mosques, local restaurants, jewelry shops, and small cafés, the area has a completely different atmosphere from the modern city center. It’s the perfect place to slow down, wander aimlessly, and stop for Turkish coffee or traditional Macedonian food.

The Bazaar is also one of the oldest and largest marketplaces in the Balkans.

Skopje Fortress (Kale Fortress)

Located above the Old Bazaar, Kale Fortress offers panoramic views across the city.

Although the fortress itself is relatively simple, the viewpoint is worth the short uphill walk, especially around sunset.

Memorial House of Mother Teresa

Many visitors are surprised to learn that Mother Teresa was born in Skopje. The memorial house dedicated to her life and humanitarian work is located near the city center and offers insight into her early years and legacy.

Skopje City Park

City Park is one of the most relaxing areas in Skopje and popular with locals year-round. It’s a great place for a break from sightseeing, especially during warmer months when cafés and outdoor terraces become busy. The surrounding Debar Maalo neighborhood is also one of the best areas for restaurants and nightlife.

Archbishop Cathedral “St. Clement of Ohrid”

One of the most important religious landmarks in Skopje is the Archbishop Cathedral “St. Clement of Ohrid.” Unlike the older churches found around the Balkans, this cathedral stands out for its unusual modern architecture and massive circular design. Inside, the cathedral feels peaceful and impressive, with beautiful frescoes, high domed ceilings, and intricate artwork.

Even visitors who are not particularly interested in religious sites often stop by because of the building’s unique appearance and cultural importance within North Macedonia.

The cathedral is located close to the city center and is easy to include while exploring Skopje on foot.

Museum of the City of Skopje

The Museum of the City of Skopje is one of the best places to understand the city’s history and transformation over time. Located inside the old railway station building damaged during the devastating 1963 earthquake, the museum combines history, archaeology, photography, and exhibitions about Skopje’s past.

One of the most striking details is the large clock on the building’s façade, permanently stopped at the exact time the earthquake struck.

Perfect Day Trip from Skopje - Matka Canyon

One of the most beautiful places in the Balkans that I have visited is the Matka Canyon. Once you are past the damp, you enter this peaceful oasis. Absolutely breathtaking views and a canyon that you can enjoy by boat or hiking the trails.

The parking was a bit challenging, but once we started to hike the trail beside the canyon, all the worries went away, and we had a fantastic day. Once you pass the dam, there will be a couple of boat and kayak rentals and also cafes. So you can have a relaxing day by the canyon or fully enjoy it with kayaks or a boat ride that will take you to the nearby caves.

You can also book one of the day trips to Matka Canyon from Skopje!

Practical Travel Tips for Visiting Skopje

Skopje Is Very Walkable

Most major attractions in central Skopje are located within walking distance of each other.

The area around Macedonia Square, the Stone Bridge, and the Old Bazaar can easily be explored on foot.

If you book your accommodation near the Macedonia Square, you will have all the main sites within walking distance of you. To find out the best location where to stay for your travel style, check out my 'Best Places to Stay in Skopje' guide!

Bring Layers for the Evening

Skopje can feel very warm during the day, especially in summer, but evenings often become cooler once the sun sets. A light jacket or sweater is useful if you plan to stay outside late, particularly near the river.

Cash Is Still Useful

Cards are accepted in many restaurants, hotels, and cafés, but smaller local spots often prefer cash. It’s useful to carry Macedonian denars for taxis, small coffee places, the local market, and parking. ATMs are easy to find throughout the city center.

Traffic Can Get Busy

Traffic in Skopje can become quite heavy during rush hour, especially late afternoon on weekdays. If possible, avoid driving through the center during peak traffic times. Taxis are affordable, but always make sure the meter is running or agree on a price beforehand. Or if you drive yourself, be extra vigilant. The only thing I didn't like about Macedonia in general was the local driving style - I was stressed the whole time haha

Summers Are Hot

Skopje can become extremely hot during the summer, particularly in July and August.

Early mornings and evenings are the best times for sightseeing during the hottest months.

Is Skopje Safe?

Yes, Skopje is generally considered safe for tourists. Watch your bag in the tourist areas, but overall, I walked alone at all hours of the day and never felt unsafe.
